Brunswick Town
Late in elementary school, my oldest brother, Bill, and his first wife took me and my youngest brother to Myrtle Beach for the first time. For some reason, we drove up the coast to the Wilmington area and wandered around for a while among the ruins of St. Phillips Church at Brunswick Town.
I can remember being confused about why we were meandering among a pile of old bricks. My only other memory of the place was of a large, flat cargo ship floating past in the river nearby.
Last year, I discovered that my second maternal great grandfather , Wade Hampton Huntley, was stationed in this community in defense of coastal forts during the American Civil War. I am sure that my brother was not aware of this. He was no history buff. I still have no idea what drew us to this place.
Bill is beyond my asking now.
