The Pix
THE PIX MOVIE THEATER
When I was growing up in Rock Hill, S.C. ,there were a number of movie theaters, but the strange one to me was the Pix. As you can see below, architecturally the Pix was very modern, avant garde and out of keeping with a small Southern town.
This building was constructed in 1940, and my cousins Nadene and Charlie tell me that my grandmother would walk them the three blocks to the Pix for movies during WWII. Hard to picture.
Recently discovered that a young man named Ben Schlanger designed the building. His later work included:
The United Nations General Assembly Building in New York
Metropolitan Opera House
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
John F. Kennedy Center
Sydney Opera House
Just proves... everybody starts somewhere.
